DRY NEEDLING:

Dry needling is a treatment that involves the insertion of a very thin needle into trigger points (aka taut bands within a muscle). Trigger points cause pain and reduced joint mobility due to the reduced blood flow to the muscles in that area. The main purpose is to improve tissue healing and restore muscle function. The top 3 benefits of dry needling are: 1) pain relief, 2) improve joint range of motion by reducing muscle tightness, and 3) speeding up recovery/healing time. Common conditions that benefit from dry needling include a range from simple grade 1 muscle strains to a grade 4 muscle tear where it assists with expediting the healing process by bringing increased blood flow to the area. It is also a very useful aid in injury prevention as it does not allow muscles to stay tight and cause compensatory muscles to overcompensate and potentially cause injury.

Joint Mobilizations

Joint mobilization (aka an adjustment) is a type of manual therapy that involves the passive movement of specific joints using the skilled application of force, direction, and technique.

The specific type, magnitude, speed, and frequency of joint mobilization performed depends on several factors. The primary effects of joint mobilizations include pain reduction, improved range of motion, and improved quality of joint movement itself (known as arthrokinematics).

Chiropractors refer to this type of manual therapy as an adjustment. Both terms offer the same end goal and benefit, which is to fix the hypomobility of the targeted joint(s).

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a popular treatment for myofascial restriction. IASTM uses specially designed instruments to provide a mobilizing effect to scar tissue and myofascial adhesions. Several IASTM tools and techniques are available such as the Graston® technique.
